Abstract

Literary translation is understood as transmitting the system of cultural values from one cultural tradition to another. Adequate translation requires adequate transfer of different aspects, including the gender component. This paper addresses the gender aspects transfer in O. Wilde’s tales translation. To perform an adequate translation, the translator has to apply to the results of studying stereotypes in a certain culture, including gender stereotypes, to transmit them to the representatives of another culture adequately. The author provides his characters with some personality traits that are perceived as typical of men or women in a particular society. The grammatical gender of nouns creates a specific gender-related perception of the character. The examples analyzed in the paper prove the necessity to keep the gender distribution in the translation, because sympathy between a male and a female characters is perceived by the readers quite differently from the sympathy between two male characters. The awareness of cultural stereotypes allows for the adequate transfer of the personification of characters.

Advertising discourse is analyzed from projectivity perspective: with regard to the construction of the global discourse meaning known as “discourse world” as mental macroreality exposed to marketing laws. Discourse world is a kind of mental space. Macroframes are its building blocks. Macroframes serve the basis of lexical categorization of thematically organized linguistic elements and establish the salient semantic characteristics of British advertising. Communicatively relevant thematic groups – foods, health and beauty, drinks, lifestyle, household goods – represent the actual space on the “cognitive map” of the discourse world. The lexemes can be further systematized into three cognitivesemantic fields – “product”, “service”, “product − service”. The functional imperative of advertising communication determines quasi systemic character of the discourse world. Its macrostructre is specified by the pragmatics of advertising and combines the characteristics of hierarchy and net. Communicatively relevant lexical units constituting the macrostructure of discourse world are organized other than traditional lexical system. Macrostructure of advertising discourse world is analyzed with prospect to further studies of discourse worlds in a comparative perspective.

Abstract

Alcesti o la recita dell’esilio is a rewriting of Euripides’s tragedy. It illustrates the myth of the “best of wives” who killed herself to prolong her husband’s life. Giovanni Raboni revisited this myth and set up contemporary scenery. The drama takes place during a dictatorship in a country that he voluntarily hasn’t defined. The characters of the original tragedy are reduced to three protagonists: the couple made by Sara and Stefano, and Stefano’s father. A mysterious watchman drives them, through a thick fog until a theatre awaiting the boat that will bring them until freedom. Yet, the terms of the escape change: the three seats that were initially foretold are only two from now on. One of the characters has to stay in order to save the others. The theme of sacrifice and the responsibility it entails makes the text tragic. Do the structure of Raboni’s play and the mise en abyme of the Athenian tragedy offer a seat to Euripides among the survivors? Seemingly speechless and decorously veiled by the rewriting, the old Greek tragedian might stand with Sara, stowaway of the contemporary Italian theatre.

Abstract

Mass media discourse was analyzed to reveal the ways of Chinese proverbs integration into American linguoculture. The processes of foreign paroemias borrowing are tightly connected with the assimilation of different worldview fragments and accompanied by creative reprocessing of language material. As a result, initial saying undergoes certain changes both in form and meaning while entering another speech community. As a rule, the borrowing happens only if the image of foreign proverb is built on easily understood metaphor and its conveyed meaning corresponds with receiving culture perception of reality.
