В статье рассматривается проблема формирования российской исторической науки в пер- вой четверти XVIII в. на примере творчества князя Дмитрия Кантемира. В его произведениях отразились черты, характерные для гуманитарной научной мысли периода Раннего Просвещения. Философские взгляды князя Дмитрия Кантемира основаны на православном христианстве, при этом провиденциализм и супернатурализм, свойственные средневековым историческим воззрениям, в концепции Д. Кантемира существенно ограничены. Наиболее явно провиденциализм проявляется в теории четырех монархий, где представлен обобщенный взгляд автора на развитие мировой истории как последовательную смену величия ряда могущественных империй. В последней, четвертой, монархии автор видит Россию, пророча ей великую роль нового центра мировой истории. В произведениях Дмитрия Кантемира мы находим широкий спектр объективных факторов, влияющих на исторический процесс: географическое положение страны, природные богатства, социально-экономическое развитие, сложная мотивация отдельных участников событий. В концепции Дмитрия Кантемира прослеживается возможность божественного влияния на ход истории через отдельных людей. Это видно в описании историком великих правителей Молдавии, наделенных неограниченной властью и защищающих свою страну от неотвратимой угрозы Османской империи. Князь Дмитрий Кантемир является последовательным сторонником идеологии абсолютизма, считающим самодержавную власть справедливого монарха обязательным условием процветания страны. Изучение творческого наследия Д. Кантемира позволяет исследователю отследить направление и выявить важнейшие характеристики развития отечественной исторической науки в период ее формирования в первой четверти XVIII в.

Prince Dimitrie Cantemir contributed to the formation of Russian historical science in the first quarter of the 18th century. His works reflected the scientific thought typical of the Early Enlightenment. Prince Cantemir’s philosophical views relied on Orthodox Christianity rather than on the Medieval providentialism and supernaturalism. Providentialism manifested itself in his Theory of Four Monarchies, i.e., global history as a sequence of four superpowers. He believed Russia to be the fourth and last monarchy, the new center of world history. Prince Cantemir explained it with its geographical location, natural resources, socio-economic development, a complex motivation of individual stakeholders, and the divine influence acting through individuals. As a devoted supporter of absolutism, he described the rulers of Moldavia as powerful defenders from the imminent Ottoman threat. The autocratic power of a just monarch was for him the only possible prerequisite for national prosperity. Prince Dimitrie Cantemir’s legacy provides a good example of the early Russian historical science.
